The Basic Mediation Training is a 40-Hour course that complies with the standards set by the Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable and Chapter 154 of the Texas Civil Practices & Remedies Code. This is an introductory course for those interested in becoming volunteer and professional mediators. The skills developed are also transferable to any profession that deals with people. This course will benefit you, whether you are interested in becoming a mediator or improving your skills as a manager, human resource director, teacher, police officer, nurse, counselor, minister, clergy, or parent.
The course includes: historical context of conflict and mediation, dynamics and elements of conflict resolution and mediation, code of ethics and conduct for mediators, skill development, ground rules for mediation, cultural awareness and establishing trust, and practice conflict resolution and mediation through role play. Four hours of this course will include an outside assignment. The cost of materials is included in the course fees.
The Practicum for Basic Mediation Training is a 34-Hour course provided at the Dispute Mediation Service (DMS) in Dallas, Texas. The Practicum gives the trainee a minimum of six mediations, which include a combination of observations, co-mediations, and solo mediations and includes 10 hours of in-service training. After each mediation, the trainee will debrief with a staff member or experienced mediator. The cost for the Practicum is included in the Basic Mediation fee. Scheduling for your Practicum will be arranged at the conclusion of the Basic Mediation Training.
Approval for MCLE credits will be requested. LPC, LMFT, and LMSW, credits are available. TCLOSE credit for law enforcement will be submitted upon request.
